p class=articleParagraph enarticleParagraphItalian cable manufacturer Prysmian has won a contract from TIM Celular Brasil, a subsidiary of TIM Brasil. Under the terms of the deal, Prysmian will supply TIM Celular Brasil with more than 1,200 km of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) telecom cables. The cables will be installed on the Tucurui-Macapa-Manaus transmission line as part of the LT Amazonas infrastructure modernisation project. The Tucurui-Macapa-Manaus line, dubbed The Big Line and located on the left bank of the Amazon River, is over 1,800 km long. It aims to enhance the electricity system in the north of the country by connecting the capital cities of the Amazon and Amapa regions to bBrazil/bs second largest hydroelectric plant, located in Tucurui. The connection will consist of seven transmission lines and eight substations involving an overall investment of more than EUR 1.2 billion./p
p class=articleParagraph enarticleParagraphThe overhead OPGW cables, manufactured for this project at the Brazilian Sorocaba plant and containing 36 optical fibres, serve the dual role of both earth conductor and communications cable, with the optical fibres providing a high-speed data transmission system carrying voice, internet and data traffic./p

pThe Brazilian government will submit to Congress within the next 15 days an interim measure providing a tax exemption for the telecommunications industry. Communications Minister Paolo Bernardo said that the sector will see a reduction in a range of taxes, including the IPI (Excise Tax), PIS and COFINS. The goal is to stimulate investments in the sector. Bernardo added that the tax breaks will last until 2016, and the cut could reach 25 percent for some production, including radios, modems, construction of towers, ducts, fibre optics and others. The IPI exemption would apply to the construction of networks, stations and substations. Currently, companies invest nearly BRL 17 billion, and the goal is to reach BRL 25 billion in investments per year./p/font/font
